Banister Primary is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for children, staff and visitors and promoting a climate where children and adults will feel confident about sharing any concerns which they may have about their own safety or the well-being of others.  

We aim to safeguard and promote the welfare of children by protecting them from maltreatment; preventing impairment of children’s health or development; ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes. 

The safety and well-being of all our children is our highest priority at all times. As a school we have the responsibility to inform children and family services if we have concerns about the welfare and/ or safety of a child in our school. 

Our Child Protection policy draws upon duties conferred by the Children Acts 1989 and 2004, The Children and Families Act 2014, S175 of the 2002 Education Act, and the guidance contained in “Working Together to Safeguard Children”, the DfE’s statutory guidance “Keeping children safe in education”, along with Ofsted Guidance and procedures. We also included advice contained in DfE’s “What to do if you’re worried a child is being abused” and “Information Sharing – Advice for practitioners”. The policy is applicable to all on and off-site activities undertaken by pupils whilst they are the responsibility of the School.

What to do if you have a concern inside school? 

At Banister we operate an open door policy where parents and carers can come and share any concerns they may have relating to the safeguarding of our children.

Our safeguarding team are always there to listen to any concerns you may have about members of our school community in a confidential manner.  

What to do if you have a concern outside school? 

If you think a child is in immediate danger – do not delay! Call the Police on 999 for emergency. 

If you want to report concerns call Southampton Children’s Resource Service on 02380 833004 or during out of hours on 02380 233344. 

If you want some support or advice you can always call NSPCC on 0808 8005000 

All children have the right to be protected from harm

•Children need to be safe and to feel safe both in and out of school
•Children sometimes need extra support which matches their individual needs, including those who may have experienced abuse
•All children have the right to speak freely and voice their values and beliefs
•All children must be encouraged to respect each other’s values and support each other
•All children have the right to be supported to meet their emotional, and social needs as well as their educational needs – we know that children who are happy, healthy and sociable will achieve better educationally
•Banister can and does contribute to the prevention of abuse, victimisation, bullying, exploitation, radicalisation, extreme behaviours, discriminatory views and risk taking behaviours
•All staff and visitors at Banister Primary have an important role to play in safeguarding children and protecting them from abuse.
